Sometimes a job seeker is perfect for a particular job.
He or she may submit a resume, impress the hiring manager and score an interview.
But after the interview, the trail goes silent. The hiring manager never calls back. Before you know it, the job is filled by someone else.
How — and why — does this happen?
Elinor Stutz, author of Hired!: How to Use Sales Techniques to Sell Yourself On Interviews, said that perception is a big part of the problem. She told StreetID that job seekers need to realize that the interview is not about them.
“It’s about how you can solve the company’s problems,” she said. “They have an opening that they need to fill quickly — a person left for some reason (it wasn’t a good fit or whatever) — and there’s a hole in the company’s business plan. You better find out what that company does, what their industry is all about, how they’re different from their competitors, and how your talent can satisfy all those problems and beyond. That’s what most people are missing.”
Stutz said that a lot of it is about building relationships with the people within your office or with your clientele.
“Either way, you have to show that you’re a team player,” she added. “You have to show how you helped others succeed, and, perhaps, how you were a leader on the team. You have to think about how you helped other people in the process of furthering your career.”
Interviewees should also talk about their education and what they’ve learned.
“You have to be able to apply it to the job that you’re seeking and understand the problems that they’re facing,” said Stutz.
“It’s about solving the hiring manager’s problems, and they have ‘em if there’s a vacancy,” she affirmed. “You know what your skills are and you know how they’re going to apply. You know how you delivered them uniquely, and you have to sell the uniqueness of how you go about your business. What’s different about you, what’s similar. There’s usually a common ground that everyone should have no matter what industry you’re in. You want to be able to say, ‘Yeah, I’ve got all that covered, but here’s how I’m different and here’s why you need my expertise and the way in which I deliver it. This is the piece you’re missing and why you need me.’”
